are heel shafted putters, but the M-1A has a straight shaft while the M-1X has a bent shaft. Newer design versions of these products include the M1 and M1-3G. The putter heads of both are essentially the same, but the alignment aids are a bit different from each other. The putter heads are large and modern looking, but they are solid and have no metal ring around the back, which is a common style these days. Besides that these putters have a couple of prominent features. Both have a wide alignment bar that is white and is meant to be an extension of the ball. The M-1 model has a line perpendicular to the target line, while the M1- 3G also has a black line from the putter face to the back of the putter head pointing toward the target line of the putt. In addition, the heads of these putters are blue in color which makes for a more definitive contrast and brings out the alignment aids. Both clubs come in heel shafted and center shafted versions, and these putters all retail for $89.99.
Ray Cook TunnelVision Series This series sports a putter head design that is inspired by traditional blade putters, but it has been modified somewhat substantially. There are three lines on top of the club head that form a prominent alignment aid which frames the ball at address. The look of the putter head is somewhat boxy, and the portion directly behind the hitting area makes a resonant bell sound at impact. The sound a putter makes contributes a lot to the feedback a golfer receives, so if this sound is unusual, each player will need to determine if it is a positive factor for his game or not. There are three putters that can be purchased in this series, and the differences are in the hosels and shaft connections. The TV2 is a center shafted putter, the TV3 is heel shafted with a standard plumber’s hosel, and the TV3 is heel shafted with a slanted hosel which bends forward and provides offset. Once again, all these models are available in sizes to fit both men and women, and they each retail for $79.99.
Ray Cook Blue Goose Series This is a line of putters inspired by traditional shapes. The uniqueness of these putters is that they are produced in a two step process that combines the efficiency and lower cost of mold production with the precision of milled putters thus resulting in a precision putter that comes at a cost of $69.99 rather than $200 or more. The putter heads are cast in a particular alloy developed for the Ray Cook Austin series, and then they are machined to historical tolerances. The Blue Goose 1 is a modified blade putter with classic heel-toe weighting and an empty back cavity behind the impact point and above a thin rear flange. The shaft has standard offset. The Blue Goose 2 is very similar but has minimal offset. The Blue Goose 3 is a mallet style with heal-toe weighting and an open cavity above a thin back flange, and the Blue Goose 4 is another blade style putter which is center shafted. These putters are all available in men and women’s sizes as well, that is, 33, 34, or 35 inches of length.
Ray Cook Classic Plus Series As the name implies, these putters are derived from classic designs and shapes. They have a dual brass weighting system which adds weight to the heel and toe areas to provide some forgiveness for off-center hits. They are made for beginning or frugal golfers and are priced at a rather remarkable $34.99. To purchase a new putter from a quality company at such a low price is almost unheard of. There are seven putters available in this product line, and they are variations on classic blade or mallet styles, generally with heel and toe weighting and various choices for shaft configuration and shaft offset.
Ray Cook Austin Series These are a series of classic style putters with some unique design and construction features. A proprietary shaft was developed with the goal of providing the proper amount of flex and damping to create optimum feedback to the golfer. A proprietary grip was also developed. Then a unique system was designed to attach the putter head to the shaft with a metal to metal contact rather than an epoxy connection. Again, this was done to provide excellent feedback. There are four putters in this series, and they all retail for $69.99. There are three classic blade style putters and one mallet, which is the M-1A which was discussed above.
Ray Cook Putters have been around for a long time and have an excellent legacy with over 200 professional wins, including all the majors. Their putters would appear to have high quality standards and an extensive amount of styles and choices, and on top of that they are remarkably affordable. They are surely worth a look. |
